Women in Construction Week: Celebrating the Women of JDC
👷♀️ Breaking Barriers, Building Roads 👷♀️
At JDC, we take pride in the incredible women who help drive our projects forward. As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we’re highlighting a few of the dedicated women on our team who are shaping the future of our industry.
Their Journeys
Each of these women took a unique path into construction, from transitioning from industries like logistics and mining to growing up surrounded by the world of building. For Lauren Hussak, construction was always in her blood—watching her father build homes and commercial projects in Jamaica inspired her to pursue a career in the field as Project Manager at JDC. Meanwhile, Greys Ocando started in mining and boundary surveying before becoming JDC’s Survey As-Built Manager, where she ensures the accuracy and compliance of our projects. And for Mily Avalos, our Small Equipment Manager, construction became a new challenge after working in logistics, proving that skills like problem-solving and adaptability translate across industries.
Overcoming Challenges
Construction has long been a male-dominated field, but that hasn’t stopped our team members from making their mark. “The construction industry comes with bias and stereotypes, but I’ve learned to prove myself through my work and build a strong professional network,” says Lauren. Greys echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and earning respect through expertise.
Making an Impact
Beyond their daily roles, these women are shaping the future of construction. Whether it’s mentoring new talent, leading major projects, or advocating for diversity in the workplace, their contributions go beyond the job itself—they’re paving the way for future generations. Greys takes pride in hiring and mentoring women in her department, ensuring they have the support and encouragement to grow in their careers. Lauren actively shares her experiences and maintains an open-door policy, helping other women navigate the industry.
Advice for the Next Generation
For young women considering a career in construction, our team has some words of wisdom:
💡 “Be bold and be strong. If someone tells you that you’re not good enough—prove them wrong!” – Lauren Hussak
💡 “Persistence, proactivity, and hard work will always pay off. There will be challenges, but don’t give up—keep rolling.” – Greys Ocando
💡 “Confidence is key. Believe in yourself, take initiative, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.” – Mily Avalos
